The Day which is observed on the 1st of June every year, was signed into law by a US former President, Mr. Bill Clinton in 1994, and proclaimed an
International event by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 to promote responsible parenting and to strengthen family values and respect.
The Day which Provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship also aims at reminding parents their roles in their various families.
Speaking to the ABS on the event, the Parish Priest of Anglican church Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area, who is also a parent, Reverend Canon Onyeka Egwuonwu, said that parents are worth the celebration as their contributions to both human and societal development can not be over emphasized.
Reverend Canon Egwuonwu, while Emphasizing the critical role of parents in the up bringing of children, said that they have the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children for the full and harmonious development of their personality, calling on them to consider family planning as it would help them give birth to the number of children they would be able to train properly, especially at this period of economic recession in the country.
He however warned parents against regular use of Cain on their children, noting that the best way of child training is living by example, applying of dialogue and cain when necessary.
On his part, another parent, Mr Onyekachukwu Onwe-Nwoke, who regretted that some parents are no more living up to expectations, attributed the ills in the society in the recent past to the negligence of some parents, urging them to wake to duty as their action towards their children could form or mar them.
Also speaking, a student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Miss Joy Chukwudolue, who expressed unconditional love for her parents, said children have every reason to celebrate their parents as they, after God are their source of survival, advising children that disobey and disrespect their parents to desist from such act as according to her it is detrimental to their future as it is against God’s law.
