As the world observes today as International Nursing Day some medical professionals have enjoined Nurses to see the profession as a call to save lives.
In January 1974, twelfth May was chosen by the International Council of Nurses to celebrate the contributions of nurses in Nation building.
The day also marks the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of Modern nursing.
Each year, International Council of Nurses prepares and distribute the International Nurses day Kit.
The kit contains educational and public information materials for use by nurses everywhere.
The theme for this year’s celebration which is nursing A Voice to lead-Achieving the sustainable development goals wants nurses to perform their duties with humility and dedication as exemplified by Florence Nightingale.
Speaking on the importance of nurses to the society, the Chief Nursing Officer In charge of special Care Baby unit at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka, Mrs Ebele Erobu described nursing profession as a call to serve humanity by attending to people with different kinds of sickness including victims of accident, pregnant mothers among others.
Speaking on quackery in nursing profession, the Acting Director, Nursing Services Ministry of health, Mrs Dominica Akpati,explainedthat Nursing and Midwifery CouncilCommittee of Anambra State embark on regular check at private hospitals in the state every year to fish out quacks and punish them accordingly.
She advised medical doctors who engage the services of quacks to desist from such in the interest of the profession.
In her contribution, a nurse with the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, Mrs Uju Ekemezie added that nursing is a call to save lives and urged nurses to do their work effectively.
