The State Government is to inaugurate the Ufuma Integrated Rice Project later this month.
Governor Willie Obiano disclosed this when he inaugurated the Orumba North Electrification project at Holy Trinity Church, Ufuma Field.
Governor Obiano revealed that the Rice project which will be the second largest in the country, will have facilities for both rice production, processing and other value chain as well as an outgrower scheme through which other rice farmers in the locality will be provided improved seedlings for increased yield.
According to him, when the project fully comes on stream with the outgrowers initiative, the state’s capacity for rice production will increase to 400,000 metric tons, surpassing its consumption capacity which is 300,000 metric tons.
Governor Obiano expressed the hope that the electrification project which runs on a dedicated feeder designed to serve only the Orumba area, will help boost socio-economic activities and give impetus to his administration’s security efforts in the area.
On his part, the Executive Director of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Dr Steve Dike said it is important that the people understand clearly their role in ensuring that the project achieves its purpose which he noted includes prompt payment of their electricity bills and protecting power cables and other facilities.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Power and Domestic Water Development, Mr Obi Nwankwo revealed that the State government will soon commence rehabilitation of all water projects across the state, and hailed the vision of the governor in visible transformation of rural communities through his numerous projects.
In a vote of thanks, the Member representing Orumba North Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr Romanus Obi expressed delight that despite the harsh economic times, the governor harkened to the call of Ndi Orumba for power, describing him as a passionate leader.
