The Speaker Anambra State House of Assembly, Barrister Rita Mmaduagwu says the mutual relationship existing between the State legislature and the executive has brought a rapid development to the state.
Barrister Mmaduagwu, disclosed this at the opening of a three day capacity building training for state law makers and House Committee Secretaries on oversight functions and conduct of public hearings organized by the state government in collaboration with state and local government reform project, in partnership with the European Union in Awka.
Addressing the participants, the speaker, described the training as vital for effective and efficient discharge of their constitutional duties and pointed out that it will afford the legislators the opportunity to learn how best to perform their oversight responsibilities as well as in conducting public hearings for the overall interest of the state.
She said that it is the primary function of a legislator to oversee every project being executed in the state and advised the law makers to utilize the opportunity of the training to widen the scope of their knowledge.
The secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu represented by the Permanent Secretary in his office, Mr Daniel Ezeanwu, urged the participants to do indebt research into various issues and disciplines, in order to make laws that will move the state forward.
The State Head of Service, Mr Harry Udu, represented by the Permanent Secretary in his office, Mr Daniel Okoli, called on them to take the training seriously as it will enhance their legislative performances.
The project coordinator, Mr James Ifeakandu, revealed that the aim of the training was to strengthen the institution of governance in which the legislators play key roles and to ensure that bills that emanate, from the executive were properly taken care of.
In their separate speeches, the member representing Anambra East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr Obinna Emeneka, his Njikoka two Counterpart, Mr Pete Ibida and member representing Aguata One Constituency, Dr Ikechukwu Umeh promised to utilize all the knowledge garnered from the training for enhanced legislative duties.
