The need for Doctors and Nurses to be trained in dealing with sickle Cell disease has been stressed.
The Chief medical director, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, AMAKU, Awka, Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor stated this during the opening ceremony of a four day training workshop for medical practitioners holding at the hospital.
Dr. Ikeakor said that the essence of the workshop is for better training and better awareness both among health care staff and the public.
The C. M. D. called on medical practitioners to institute early management of sickle Cell children noting that the workshop was organized in order to catch them at the early stage.
On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Sickle Cell Alliance Incorporated, Dr. Victoria Odesina, noted that people with sickle cell are often at an increased risk of contracting serious infections on they could become anaemic, which is when red blood cells cannot cary enough oxygen around the body saying that it can cause tiredness and shortness of breath.
According to her, the training of doctors and nurses is for them to have good knowledge and understanding of the condition of patients with sickle cell. Contributing, the director medical services in the state ministry of Health, Dr. Azubuike Nweje, said that the health staff when properly trained would make a huge difference to thousands of people with sickle cell disease.
He employed the health workers to utilize the opportunity given to them in order to improve the plight of those living with sickle cell disease in the state.
