The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Associate Professor Anthony Akamobi, says a private sector- driven economy is a permanent solution to the challenge of unemployment in the country.
To this end, he has urged the Federal Government to take proactive measures to diversify the economy.
Professor Akamobi said the bulk of employment opportunities in advanced countries were created by the private sector as, according to him, government has weak employment base.
He noted that poverty alleviation programmes are only palliative measures not solution to unemployment.
Professor Akamobi urged government to provide necessary infrastructure and environment that would encourage investors and industrialists to establish and expand their businesses in the country.
He cautioned against increasing taxes as an option for revenue generation to avoid heightening the rate of poverty in the country.
The Dean said the glut in oil market and subsequent steady decline in global oil prices is an opportunity for Nigeria to explore the untapped opportunities in other sectors and open fresh windows for revenue generation.
