The European Union, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund, is set to spend about three point five million Euros to improve water supply to selected communities in Aguata and Anambra East Local government areas.
This was made known by Mrs Kate Kannebi, the representative of the European Union delegation to Nigeria, during a One-day clarification meeting and site visit in Anambra State, under the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programmes, Phase two, held in Awka.
Speaking to ABS correspondent, Chinedu Ezenwa, Mrs Kannebi noted that selection of Aguata and Anambra East Council areas was a good reward for the state’s good performance in the execution of the water and sanitation programmes and recalled that the State signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Union for the implementation of Nigeria Water Supply Sanitation Sector Reform Programme.
She added that the European Union is committed to ensuring that poor Nigerians have access to potable drinking water and building capacity for the institutions that are responsible for water, in order to sustain the water supply system in the country.
On his part, the Commissioner for Public Utilities and Water Resources, Mr Obi Nwankwo, said the present administration is poised to implement policies that are designed to fight abject poverty and improve infrastructure.
Mr Nwankwo said the state stands to benefit more in partnering with the European Union and UNICEF, in the area of Sanitation and Water Supply and requested that the programme be expanded to other local government areas.
Also speaking, the Director, International Co-operation Department, National Planning Commission, Abuja, Mr Oladimeji Shogboye, commended Anambra for being the first state, to pay the thirty per cent counterpart contributions for the priority works, the main works contracts and also for keeping the fund in the account, despite delays in procuring the works component of the programme.
