The State Government says, it will not renege in enforcing its directive on the removal of attachment of sales points, kiosks and other appendages on already existing buildings as well as illegal structures constructed on drainages across the state.
Â
Governor Willie Obiano stated this when he received a delegation from the state chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects who called on him at the Governor’s Lodge Amawbia.
Addressing the delegation, Governor Obiano said the measure has become necessary to improve the face of infrastructure, reduce environmental and health hazards resulting from blockage of drainage system as well as avoid accidents caused by narrow roads.
He noted that in quick response to the incessant collapse of buildings early last year in the state, his government had set up, in collaboration with the institute, an investigative panel and the Building Material Testing Laboratory, which has helped to check the ugly scenario.
The Governor assured that he will partner the institute in designing the new Estates which will soon be springing up in various parts of the state through his administration’s partnership with private developers.
Earlier in his speech, the state chairman of the Institute, Architect Peter Okpala said, the Institute will support the state government in the areas of infrastructural development through building projects monitoring and supervision.
In a vote of thanks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Architect Michael Okonkwo, urged the members of the institute and other professionals in building construction to adhere strictly to the stipulations of the control manual development by the Authority.
