The Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development, Dr. Mrs. Uju Nworgu, has called on wealthy individuals to partner the state government in its efforts to develop sports at the grassroots.
The Commissioner made the call at the finals of the Victor Anichebe Grassroots Football Championship for football clubs in old Njikoka local government area.
While commending the Nigerian international, Victor Anichebe for initiating the championship, Dr. Nworgu represented by a Director in the Ministry, Mr. Joseph Umudu stated that by the programme many youths would become responsible members of the society and called on Ndi Anambra to emulate the think home gesture of Mr. Anichebe.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Grassroots Mobilization, who is also the Chairman of the organizing committee of the Championship ,Sir Anthony Ugorji said the competition was initiated in response to the clarion call of the present administration so as to promote sports and help engage the youths.
Other Speakers including the Transition Committee Chairman of Anaocha Local Government Area, Engr. Ikeobi Ejiofor and the State Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State, Mr. Anthony Orji, the Chairman on the occasion, Comrade Ochije Muodilim commended Mr. Victor Anichebe for giving back to the society.
Responding, the Sunderland FC Striker and former Super Eagles team member, Mr. Victor Anichebe said that he is encouraged by the security policies of the state government adding that he is always ready to invest in Sports infrastructure in the state.
The first edition of the Victor Anichebe Football Championship
was won by Black Stones Football Club, Nri with five hundred thousand naira prize money.
FC Ogene, Obeledu came second while Dynamic Football Club, Aguluizgbo came third.
