The Commissioner for Education Professor Kate Omenugha, has described sports, as one of the major things that help to nurture and improve the academic well being of every child as well as help to fish out talents among them.
Professor Omenugha was speaking during the Inter-House Competition of Christ the King College Onitsha.
Professor Omenugha represented by a staff in the ministry, Mrs. Justina Okafor,announced efforts of the state government to ensure that sports take its pride of place in the state.
She commended the management of the school for making out time to train the children in the area of spots, noting that a lot of talents have been identified which when harnessed, will make the state proud.
Also speaking, the chairman, Anambta State Universal Basic Education Board, Awka, Chief Nzemeka Olisah, who is also an old boy of the school, spoke extensively on the importance of sorts in the life of children as it helps them develop mental alertness, and ability to accept defeat among others
He also urged them to take their studies seriously.
Earlier in a remark, the Chairman on the occasion, Professor Peter Kachi, while describing Christ the King College Onitsha as one of the best schools in the Eastern part of the country, noted that the school has produced important personalities such as Governors, Chief
Judges and others who have made their marks in various aspects of life.
He urged the students to be dedicated in their studies, and toe the steps of their older boys.
Presenting an address, the Principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Charles Okwumuo noted the importance of sporting activities in schools and colleges,.adding that sports contribute to economic empowerment as it offers the youths the opportunity to acquire basic skills for professional sports
