The wife of the state Governor, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, has charged parents and guardians to be wary of the type of food given to their children as well as see to their periodic de-worming as these may affect their intellectual and all round development.
The Governor’s wife made this call at Isu-Aniocha in Awka North local government area while flagging off the week – long deworming of school children organized by the state government in collaboration with the federal ministry of health and civil society organizations.
The Governor’s wife who said that the exercise could not have come at a better time than now, especially when the primary schools are bracing for the federal government school feeding package, was thankful to the state ministry of health for initiating the exercise.
The Governor’s wife who hinted on some of the foods that children do not usually want to take, which according to her, are good and natural sources of vitamins, enjoined mothers and guardians to endeavor to increase their children’s intake of beans and vegetables as it will be helpful in their development.
Earlier in an opening remark, the state commissioner for health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, who stood in for the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano described the state- wide de-worming exercise as very vital, linking stunted growth, lack of certain vitamins in the body and poor mental development of children to the activities of different types of worm in the body.
He, therefore, thanked the Governor for his unrelenting efforts to transform the health institutions in the state, even as he highlighted other giant strides of the present administration in the health sector to include construction of sixty-three state of the art primary healthcare centers across the three senatorial zones in the state, the passage into law of the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, coming first in the national nutritional index research carried out for all the states in Nigeria, among others.
While the state wide de-worming exercise is targeted at school children between ages one to fifteen years, the vitamin A supplementation is to be given to children under- five years of age. Administering of the drugs to the first set of pupils by the Governor’s wife formed the highpoints of the event.
