South – East Governors have been urged to study and replicate Governor Willie Obiano’s proactive measures that have checked excesses of herdsmen in the state.
Speaking in Awka a legal practitioner, Mr. John Okoli Akirika said this will eliminate hostilities between herdsmen and their host communities and ensure harmonious co- existence in the entire region .
Mr. Okoli – Akirika who is a former Commissioner for land observed that Governor Obiano’s decisive and firm stand as well as his insistence that herdsmen must pay compensation to farmers for crops destroyed by their cattle while framers should equally pay for any harm done to the cattle have provided necessary checks and balances for the needed frame work to discourage any interest group from taking the laws into their hands.
He explained that this is in line with the constitutional responsibility of the Governor to protect lives and property and biblical injunction as recorded in Exodus chapter Twenty- two , verse five which directed that anyone that allows his animal to graze on other people’s farm should pay restitution.
Mr. Okoli Akirika urged herdsmen not to infringe on the Agricultural and Economic rights of farmers as well as respect the culture and tradition of their host communities to avoid unnecessary clash of interest and strengthen frontiers of understanding among various ethnic groups.
Also speaking a community leader Sir Johnson Ezekwe called on the Federal Government to take decisive action to disarm all herdsmen across the country to check incessant killings of innocent Nigerians.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
