Building Collapse: FG, NIB Urged To Enforce Laws, National Building Code


The federal and state Governments have been urged to ensure strict enforcement of relevant laws in the Building Sector to check quackery and encourage builders to contribute in the socioeconomic growth of the country.

This formed the major theme of discourse during the investiture of the twenth President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Keneath Nduka, held in Abuja.

The International Conference Center Abuja, venue of the investiture witnessed the presence of government functionaries, including representatives of governors of Anambra and Nasarawa state, Captains of industry and the traditional ruler of Oraifite, Igwe Daniel Udoji among others.

In their separate speeches, the chairman on the occasion, Senator Ken Nnamani represented by Bala Kaoje and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Sir Alderton Ewa, emphasized the importance of builders in the socioeconomic growth of the country, commending NIOB for ensuring standard in the construction industry through the National Building Code, training of artisans and partnering with other Institutes noting that the issue of quackery and building collapse will be nipped in the bud especially with the coming of a seasoned builder as NIOB President.

In his valedictory speech, the immediate past President of the NIOB, Mr. Tijjani Shuaib and Professor Akin Akindoyeni in his key note address pointed out that NIOB have become critical stakeholder in the construction industry especially with the planned affordable mass housing project in Abuja, adding that the training of artisans and collaboration with other agencies are important.

Presenting his inaugural address, the new President of Nigerian Institute of Building, Keneath Nduka said that his major objective as the President of the Institute will be ensuring professionalism, training of artisans and development of the NIOB permanent site amongst others.

He called for all and sundry to give him maximum support to ensure the growth of the Institute.

High points of the investiture ceremony was the investiture rites, cultural display, presentation of awards to deserving personalities and members and also induction of newly elected corporate members.
