Eligible voters in the Anambra Central Senatorial District are going to the polls today to elect their Senator.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, accreditation and voting in the re-run election will commence simultaneously at eight o’clock in the morning and ends at two o’clock in the afternoon.
The election will take place in seven local government areas that make up the Senatorial district, namely Anaocha, Njikoka, Dunukofia, Awka North and South as well as Idemili North and South.
Human and vehicular movement in the affected areas will be restricted throughout the election period.
It would be recalled that the Appeal Court of the Enugu Division had on December 2015 nullified the Senatorial election which was conducted in March the same year and ordered a re-run election.
However series of litigations delayed its conduct, which made the people of the district to remain without a representative at the Senate for more than two years.
This election is now being conducted on the basis of the judgement of the Abuja division of the Appeal Court of November twentieth 2017, which ordered INEC to conduct a re-run election within ninety days.
INEC on that basis, fixed January thirteenth 2018, for the re-run election.
Fourteen political parties are fielding candidates for the election which is holding in one thousand five hundred and forty-eight polling units across the one hundred and nine electoral wards in the seven Local Government Areas that make up the Anambra Central Senatorial District.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
