A major step towards harmonizing the interests of the Igbo, Yoruba, Niger Delta and Middle Belts regions of the country registered its first success with the hosting of convocation of leaders of thought from the areas with what is called HandShake Across the Niger.
In a welcome address at the event, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia-Nwodo, used the event to restate that the restructuring of the Nigerian Federation is non-negotiable.
Chief Nwodo emphasized that the every credible analysis has shown that unless power is devolved to states and states allowed to control their natural resources, there would not be credible development in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the Afenifere, the Representative of the Afenifere Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, noted that the unity of Nigeria could only be achieved through setting up a true federalism.
He called for the revisiting of the 1954 constitution which puts into cognizance the interests of both the minorities and majorities tribes alike.
However, an attempt to disrupt the event during the speech by President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nwodo was quickly averted.
The problem started as the group booed the Igbo leader in the middle of his speech.
It will be recalled that the Ebonyi State Governor, Engineer David Umahi, had stated that his state will boycott the event when the Local Organizing Committee paid him a visit yesterday.BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
